Breaking Barriers: Women in Construction Making an Impact Across the Industry

diversity-in-construction-industry
The construction and exterior services industries have historically been male-dominated. From field work to office operations, most roles have traditionally been held by men. But who says women can’t do it just as well? At Thompson Exterior Services, we believe talent, leadership, and determination are not defined by gender—and our team is helping change that narrative within the construction industry.

In this article, we recognize the hard work, strength, and resilience of the women who are part of our company. In a team of 40 professionals, only five are women—but their contributions play an essential role in strengthening communication, leadership, and collaboration across our projects.

What Women Bring to the Industry

Across the company, women contribute to the success of our projects in many ways. For Rachael, who manages office operations, attention to detail and communication are two of the strengths women often bring to construction teams.

“I believe women are highly proficient in being meticulous and paying attention to detail. Women also tend to show a stronger need for organization and executing tasks according to specific detail, which directly impacts project accuracy. Also, the communication skills women bring to the table help improve and deepen client relationships.”

Tatiana, who supports sales and marketing strategies, sees similar qualities contributing to the company’s growth.

“Women often bring strong organizational skills, collaboration, and attention to detail, which help turn ideas into consistent results.”

Earning Respect and Building Leadership

Working in a male-dominated industry can present challenges, but leadership and respect are often built through communication, actions, and results.

“Good communication and making fair decisions for everyone helps. Actions show people that you are responsible, that you want to understand the work and help the team.”

Rachel mentioned that when she feels underestimated, “Instead of reacting I focus on communicating with my team, explaining my vision, and voicing what my expectations are. When you set goals and speak about outcomes, you get results.”

Learning and Growing in the Field

Working in the field brings its own experiences, especially in teams where most technicians are men. For Nube, who works as a technician, the experience has been largely positive and collaborative.

“My experience working with men has been very good. They have always helped me in my learning process. For example, now that I am working with new machines for scratch removal, they have been part of the process so I can improve.”

She believes that professionalism and respect are key to building strong relationships on the job site. Separating friendship from work has helped a lot. She is always respectful with them and they respect her the same way.
Project manager Laura, also points out that working with different crews requires adapting to different communication styles.

“Every work group is different. Each team has their own way of communicating and interacting. Understanding those dynamics and setting limits has been one of the biggest challenges.”

Finding Confidence in a Changing Industry

For many women in construction-related fields, working in a male-dominated environment can also become an opportunity for growth and confidence. Daniela explains that being part of an industry where most professionals are men has helped her strengthen her voice as a professional.

“Josh Thompson, president and owner, opening the doors to women in different areas-finance, field work, and management-is a great honor. Attending meetings and networking events where 90% are men helped me build a stronger side of myself that I didn’t know before. It made me more determined, and more confident as a professional.”

Tatiana also notes that one of the challenges can be ensuring different perspectives are considered.

“Making sure different perspectives are considered ultimately helps create better outcomes.”
